Somewhere in your market, a competitor is paying attention to AI.
That’s not a scare tactic. It’s just the reality of where we are right now. The businesses that are leaning into AI-driven marketing, even if they don’t understand every technical detail, are starting to build advantages that are going to be hard to catch up to later.
The question isn’t whether this matters. It’s whether your business is keeping pace.
What “Paying Attention to AI” Actually Looks Like
First, let’s clear something up. When we say competitors are “paying attention to AI,” we don’t mean they’re all building chatbots or writing code.
Most of them aren’t doing anything that exotic. What they’re doing is making sure their online presence is set up in a way that works with, not against, the new search landscape.
Specifically, the businesses that are gaining ground in AI-powered search right now tend to:
- Have a fully optimized and regularly updated Google Business Profile (not just claimed, but actively managed)
- Maintain consistent name, address, and phone information across every platform they appear on
- Collect and respond to reviews on a regular basis
- Create content that answers the real questions their customers are asking
- Have a website that loads quickly, works on mobile, and clearly communicates who they serve and where
None of this is revolutionary. But the businesses that are doing all of it well are building a compounding advantage, one that makes them increasingly more visible as AI becomes a bigger part of how customers search.
The Gap Is Growing
Here’s what concerns us when we talk with small business owners across Washington County and the greater Milwaukee area: many of them are still operating on a marketing approach that worked five years ago.
That’s not a criticism. Running a small business is all-consuming. When you’re managing employees, serving customers, and keeping the lights on, “keeping up with digital marketing trends” often falls to the bottom of the list. We get it.
But the gap between businesses that are actively managing their digital presence and those that aren’t is growing, and AI is accelerating it.
Imagine two businesses in the same industry, in the same community. Business A has an updated website, 80 positive Google reviews, a consistent social presence, and content that answers their customers’ questions. Business B has a website from 2019, 12 reviews, and a Facebook page they post to occasionally.
In traditional search, Business B might still show up, maybe not first, but somewhere on the page. In AI-powered search? AI tools are increasingly likely to skip Business B entirely and recommend Business A.
What Competitors Are Getting Right (And You Can Too)
The encouraging news is that catching up is possible. And it’s often less complicated than business owners expect.
The businesses leading in AI-influenced search right now are getting a few fundamentals right:
They’re visible everywhere that matters. Their business information is accurate on Google, Yelp, Facebook, and whatever other platforms their customers use. Consistency signals credibility.
They’re collecting reviews intentionally. Not by pressuring customers, but by making it easy and natural to leave a review at the right moment. Reviews are one of the strongest trust signals in AI-powered search.
They’re creating content with purpose. Blog posts, social media, even FAQ pages, content that directly addresses the questions their target customers are searching for.
They have a digital presence that reflects who they actually are. Not an outdated placeholder, but a living, breathing online presence that communicates the quality and character of their business.
The Right Question to Ask Yourself
Don’t ask “Is AI hurting my business?” Ask instead: “Is my digital presence strong enough to compete in a landscape where AI is making more and more of the filtering decisions?”
If the answer is “I’m not sure,” that’s worth exploring. Because in the time it takes to think about it, your competitors are figuring it out.
