Short answer? Both. And which one applies to your business probably depends on what your digital presence looks like right now.
Over the past few weeks, we’ve been talking about how AI is changing the way customers search and discover businesses online. We’ve covered the basics of AI-powered search tools, from Google’s AI Overviews to ChatGPT, and why they matter even for small, local businesses here in the Hartford and greater Milwaukee area.
This week, we’re getting to the part most business owners want to know: is this change actually helping or hurting small businesses like mine?
Here’s the honest answer: AI search is creating a wider gap between businesses with strong digital presences and those without. If your online presence is solid, AI can actually work in your favor in ways traditional search never did. If it’s not, AI might be making you harder to find than ever.
Where AI Search Is Helping Small Businesses
Let’s start with the good news, because there’s a lot of it.
AI-powered search tools are, at their core, trying to give users the best possible answer to their question. That’s actually a good thing for businesses that are genuinely great at what they do, especially local businesses with strong community roots.
Here’s where small businesses have a real edge:
Reviews and reputation matter more. AI tools pull heavily from customer reviews when making recommendations. A business in Menomonee Falls with 75 genuine five-star reviews on Google has a significant advantage over a big-box competitor with thousands of generic ratings. Real relationships with real customers are something AI can see, and it rewards them.
Specificity wins. AI tools are very good at matching specific answers to specific questions. A business that clearly serves “residential plumbing in Washington County” or “tax prep for small businesses in the Milwaukee area” is easier for AI to recommend than one with vague, general messaging.
Local credibility counts. AI is increasingly sophisticated about geography. Being recognized as a trusted, established business in your specific community is a real competitive advantage in AI-powered search results.
Where AI Search Is Making Things Harder
Now for the flip side, and this is worth paying attention to.
AI-generated search results are changing the traffic patterns that small businesses have relied on for years. Specifically:
Fewer clicks to websites. When an AI Overview answers a customer’s question directly on the search page, many people never click through to read more. If your business strategy relies on driving traffic to your website, AI summaries can cut into that traffic, even if your site ranks well.
Higher bar for visibility. To show up in AI-generated answers, your business needs to be seen as a credible source. That means your website, your reviews, your Google Business Profile, and your online content all need to be working together in a consistent way. A half-updated website and a Google listing with wrong hours aren’t going to cut it anymore.
Speed of change. AI search is evolving faster than almost any other aspect of digital marketing. What works today might look different in six months. For a small business owner who’s already stretched thin, keeping up can feel overwhelming.
The Bottom Line for Small Business Owners
Here’s what we tell the business owners we work with across Hartford, West Bend, Grafton, and the surrounding Milwaukee area: don’t be afraid of AI search, but don’t ignore it either.
The businesses that are winning in this new environment aren’t doing anything magical. They have up-to-date, accurate information across all their online platforms. They’re collecting reviews consistently. They’re creating content that answers the questions their customers are actually asking. And they’re paying attention to how search is changing, or working with someone who does that for them.
The question to ask yourself is simple: if a customer asked an AI tool right now to recommend a business like mine in my area, would my name come up? If you’re not sure, that’s worth exploring.
